A watermark is a message to whoever sees the page after it leaves your hands: this is a draft, this is confidential, this came from us. It is drawn across the content, faintly and usually at an angle, so it is visible without hiding what the page says. This tool stamps one onto every page of a PDF — either a line of text, or an image such as a logo — and lets you decide how transparent it is, how it is tilted, and whether it sits once in the middle or repeats across the page.
Opacity is the setting to get right. Around 30 percent reads clearly on a white page without making the text underneath hard to read; go lower for a subtle brand mark, higher when the whole point is that nobody misses it. Tiling repeats the mark in a grid, which makes it far harder to crop away than a single stamp in the centre.
Two honest limits. First, the built-in font covers Latin letters, numbers and common punctuation — the alphabets of English, French, German, Spanish and their neighbours. Text in other scripts needs a font embedded in the file, which this tool does not do yet; it will tell you rather than print boxes. Use an image of the text instead if you need it now. Second, a watermark is a visual marker, not a lock. It deters casual copying and makes the origin of a page obvious, but a determined person with a PDF editor can remove it.
The stamp becomes part of each page's drawing instructions, so it shows in every viewer and on paper. The original file is not changed; you get a new copy.
Questions people ask
- Text or image — which should I use?
- Text for a status like DRAFT or CONFIDENTIAL, an image for a logo or anything in a script the built-in font cannot write. A PNG with a transparent background looks cleanest as an image watermark.
- What opacity should I choose?
- Start at 30 percent. It is clearly visible without getting in the way of reading. Use 10 to 20 for a discreet brand mark, 50 or more when the warning itself is the point.
- Why did my text come back with an error?
- The built-in font only covers Latin letters and common symbols. Characters from other scripts cannot be written with it, so the tool stops rather than printing garbage. Use an image of the text as a workaround.
- Does the watermark go on every page?
- Yes, every page gets the same mark in the same place. Marking only some pages is not an option yet — split the PDF first, mark the part you need, then merge it back.
- Can someone remove the watermark?
- With a PDF editor, yes. A watermark shows where a page came from and discourages casual reuse; it does not protect the document. Tiling makes it harder to crop out but not impossible.
- Is the PDF uploaded?
- No. The watermark is drawn into the file by your browser on this page. Nothing is sent to a server.
